The Nike FuelBand may already be a distant memory, but that doesn’t mean the company is giving up on wearable technology altogether. CEO Mark Parker recently sat down with Bloomberg News to talk about the future of wearables, the possibility of working with Apple in the future and more.
Parker seems confident that wearable technology has a strong future, even if he’s not sure what form it will take. Asked whether the entire thing might simply be a fad, he predicts that today’s geeky gadgets could evolve into something “more stealthy, more integrated, more stylish, and more functional.” The main purpose of wearables should be to give people “more information in a user friendly way,” Parker adds.
As for Nike, the company’s Nike+ platform is still a huge focus even if it isn’t making its own hardware. Parker says the goal is to expand from today’s 25 million users to “hundreds of millions” in the future. He’s also “bullish” about working with Apple on future products, claiming the two companies combined can accomplish things neither could on their own.
Apple and Nike still have a very close relationship. Tim Cook sits on Nike’s board of directors, and Cupertino scooped up FuelBand designer Jay Blahnik last year ahead of the Apple Watch unveiling. We’re curious to see how the two companies work together moving forward, though Parker doesn’t offer any real hint at what might be coming down the pipeline.
