Remember those audio files that leaked a week or two back that hinted that Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS was originally intending to have an 8-player mode? We speculated that there was no way this could be possible on the Nintendo handheld, and it might have been cut due to simple over-ambition. However, we did not rule out the possibility that Nintendo had kept it in reserve for the Wii U.
Since then, other modes not found in the Nintendo 3DS have been confirmed or leaked, and during today’s Nintendo Direct, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U was confirmed to have these monstrous 8-player matches. Let the chaos begin!
This 8-player mode will unfortunately be local co-op only and will not support online play. It will also be limited only to select larger maps like Palutena’s Temple, Big Battlefield, and Temple.
On top of the 8-player mode, the Wii U will also sport two planes of gameplay with some characters able to brawl in the background while others slash away in the foreground.
Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will be released on Nov. 21.
