How to Play Resident Evil HD Remaster in English Before Next Year

Every once in a while, Capcom throws a bone to the video game importing scene by giving a region-free Japanese game an English option. It happened in Phoenix Wright 2 on the DS, and it’s going to happen for the Resident Evil HD Remaster.

The Hong Kong and other Asian PlayStation versions of the game, distributed by┬áSony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia, will sport both the Japanese and English audio tracks, and they can be switched on the fly. This version will be released on Nov. 27, meaning that if you are a Resident Evil fan who can’t wait for the early 2015 launch in America, then this is your chance.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, this is a very exciting release for the series. It shows that Capcom understands in which entries the popularity lies, and it shows that it is willing to update a classic without the need to stick to traditional design choices.

In this case, Resident Evil HD Remaster is a port of the popular GameCube remake of the PlayStation original, and it is far and away the scariest game in the entire series. Capcom is finally doing away with the classic Resident Evil tank controls as well, opening up the game to an entire audience who avoid it just for that reason. They’ll still be there for purists, too.

I’m going to wait for the official American release, but you can go ahead and import yours next month on Nov. 27 if you like. Resident Evil HD Remaster will be released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC in early 2015.
