Now that Apple Pay is alive and kicking, the wallet-less future finally seems imminent. And in an attempt to capitalize on the service’s launch, Major League Baseball and MasterCard have announced a rather timely partnership that will bring contactless readers to Kauffman Stadium (home of the Kansas City Royals) and AT&T Park (home of the San Francisco Giants). That means the next hotdog you buy during the seventh inning stretch can be done directly through your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus (or Android device using another NFC system).
These are the first stadiums in American sports to widely support Apple Pay and other NFC-based payments, and should really come as no surprise given MLB’s quickness to adopt new technologies. If all goes according to plan, chances are MLB will bring support to as many stadiums as possible. It wouldn’t be surprising to see other leagues around the U.S. support contact-less payments, too, which is good for both iOS and Android users.
Sure, Apple Pay isn’t the first NFC-based system out there, but it might be the push retailers needed to roll out wider support. In addition to support in the stadiums directly, MasterCard said fans will be able to purchase individual tickets through tickets.com next season using Apple Pay. On Apple’s site, other ticket providers are listed as coming later this year, including TicketMaster and StubHub, while Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, is also on the list, among others.
