When the iPad Air 2 was first announced, Apple surprised everyone by introducing a new A8X chip, which the company promised would see a 40-percent speed improvement over the first-gen iPad Air. According to new Geekbench scores, the device might be much faster than Apple initially lead on, at least in multi-core performance.
There are two different scores here, but the A8X chip pretty much blows every other iOS device out of the water, including Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In the first chart, Apple’s iPad Air 2 with A8X chip scores 4477 in multi-core performance, which is well above the second place iPhone 6 at 2879. The iPhone 6 Plus, meanwhile, comes in at 2854, while the iPad Air received a score of 2664. The performance differences between the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus really isn’t that different. However, the iPad Air 2’s three core A8X obliterates those scores.
In single-core performance, the iPad Air 2 sets a new record thanks to the A8X chip’s 1.5Ghz cores, though it’s not significantly better coming from the A8 chip found in Apple’s most recent phones. Compared to the iPad Air (1472), the iPad Air 2 got a score of 1812, which is coincidentally the same year Jon Rettinger was born.
Apple typically doesn’t put a priority on specs, but it’s clear the company’s iPad Air 2 smokes the current iOS lineup. Whether that’s enough to convince existing iPad owners to upgrade remains to be seen. The company’s tablet has seen a steady decline in sales over the past several quarters, though it’s clear this generation is the best Apple has ever put out. In addition to the A8X chip, the iPad Air 2 also comes equipped with Touch ID, a 128GB option, and a new gold color to match Apple’s phone lineup.
