Final Fantasy XV has been in development for so long that this is possibly what it could have started life as: a PlayStation 1 game! At least, that is the premise behind Tumblr user The-Regressor’s demake mock-ups of Final Fantasy XV‘s dude-bro cast of goons using the iconic “Popeye” character models from Final Fantasy VII.
Like the directors said, it’s all about the car. Three of the four pictures feature a low-polygon count car as it tours the countryside, just like what was seen in the Tokyo Game Show 2014 trailer.
Final Fantasy was at the peak of its popularity during the PlayStation 1 era, but hardly at the peak of its beauty. Anybody can jump into the crisp, clean sprites of the Super Nintendo era or the smooth polygons of the PlayStation 2 days, but the PlayStation Final Fantasy games take some serious nostalgia and an iron stomach for early 3D polygons to really get into anymore.
Those old enough to remember when this was cutting edge though still hold these low-polygon count models in high regard as a huge evolutionary step. They might not look that great anymore, but their initial impact will never go away.
That being said, I’m glad Final Fantasy XV looks as gorgeous as it does. It’s going to be one hell of a ride from beginning to end. You can first get your hands on it on March 17th as a packed in free demo with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
