The day has finally come for The Evil Within to be released onto the public, and the new launch trailer is enough to set the tone. A group of police officers storm a house, investigating claims of grizzly murders, but they find a whole lot more than they bargained for.
Sound familiar? It’s the exact same setup as Resident Evil, and not-so-coincidentally, it has the same creative mind behind it. Survival horror has been done to hell and back ever since Shinji Mikami blew up onto the scene with his classic Capcom series, and you really have to wonder how jaded and immune to violence gamers have become if they aren’t disturbed by some of the images we’ve seen from this game or just this trailer alone.
Seriously, I’ve seen people shrug off chainsaws cutting through lady zombies, bloody spider demons, spiked and enclosing hallways, giant hands bursting through walls, and masked homicidal maniacs like they were nothing. If the goofy Resident Evil was considered scary back in the day, you really have to wonder how far this game would have been able to fly in the mid 90s!
I know not all gamers are immune to The Evil Within‘s charms. At least one of my co-writers doesn’t have the stomach for this kind of game (Editor’s Note: It’s me. I can’t deal with horror games. Big baby. -Joey), so it’s been left to me to give you my thoughts. Be sure to keep an eye out for them in the coming days, or you can just go ahead and determine what you think about it by yourself. The Evil Within is now available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
