Usually we expect leaks to come through unnamed sources or out of overseas factories. But Apple, which has been really missing some important details lately, let slip its iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2 ahead of tomorrow’s event. No official specs are mentioned, but the information clearly mentions the addition of Touch ID, which we’ve heard rumors for months now.
The information was posted in Apple’s iPad User Guide for iOS 8.1. Both tablets, which haven’t officially been announced, are mentioned. Aside from Touch ID, the devices essentially look the same, though we’re expecting some major internal upgrades, especially for the iPad Air 2. Perhaps most importantly, there’s no 12.9-inch device in sight.
Aside from the Touch ID nod, it looks like the iPad Air 2 will also feature a Burst Mode photo feature, which was first introduced with the iPhone 5s. The documents don’t say when iOS 8.1 will drop, though since user guides are already available, it can’t be long; a recent leak suggested Apple Pay, which will be a big part of the new software, would be available this weekend, so perhaps Apple will roll the software out tomorrow.
So it looks like the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 are unofficially official. Now what else will Apple announce at tomorrow’s event? Maybe a new iMac? Less than a day until we find out.
