Leaked Memo Says Apple Pay is Coming to Walgreens on Oct. 18

Apple Pay is going to be available in Walgreens stores across the United States beginning Saturday, October 18, according to an internal memo that has been leaked online. The document, meant for Walgreens employees, says customers who have compatible Apple devices “will immediately be able to use the service.”

A Saturday launch throws Apple Pay right in at the deep end. It’s the busiest day of the week for retailers, and it can cause havoc when payment systems go down. But Walgreens clearly has plenty of confidence in the service, which promises to be the simplest, quickest, and most secure payment method you’ve used to date.

According to the memo, which was obtained by MacRumors, offering Apple Pay supports Walgreens’ mission to be “America’s Most Loved Pharmacy-led Health, Wellbeing and Beauty Enterprise.” It also continues the company’s commitment to “ultimate customer convenience.”

The launch will go ahead just two days after Apple holds its next special event. In addition to new iPads, the Cupertino company is expected to unveil new iMacs with Retina displays, and provide launch details for Yosemite, its next-generation Mac OS X operating system.

Apple may also provide more details on the launch of Apple Pay, which hasn’t yet rolled out since it was announced alongside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last month.

Walgreens won’t be the only retailer to support Apple Pay early; Apple has confirmed that McDonald’s, Staples, Macy’s, and other big names have already pledged their support. In order to use Apple Pay, those with an iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will need Apple’s upcoming iOS 8.1 update, which is already being tested by registered developers.
