Xeodrifter Gets Gameplay Trailer – A Metroidvania Effort for the 3DS

Xeodrifter was announced this past summer by Renegade Kid, the studio behind the likes of Mutant Mudds. Xeodrifter is a 2D “Metroidvania” style game that’s launching exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS.

Today, we have the first gameplay trailer from Renegade Kid. The game looks and sounds fantastic, and it’s suddenly gone from “on my radar” to “on my must-have list.” Too bad I’ll have to wait until 2015.

I’ll admit it, I’m a bit worn out by the Metroidvania genre as of late. It seems like almost every 2D indie affair is heading towards the style these days, and I guess Renegade Kid had an itch to take a good crack at it themselves.

I don’t know what it is about the game that has me getting over that genre fatigue. Maybe it’s the soundtrack, maybe it’s the idea of docking on planets in space, or maybe it’s the mechanic of switching between foreground and background planes that we see in the trailer. Xeodrifter just looks cool.

What do you think about this one? Will you nab it on the 3DS next year?
