Google still hasn’t announced any plans to hold a press conference this month but, even still, we’re expecting some sort of final Android L release in October. As is usually the case, Google will likely release some new hardware that runs its latest Android software to show off the features. The most recent rumors point to two devices, the Nexus 6 made by Motorola and codenamed Shamu, and the Nexus 9, allegedly developed by HTC. Now we have some fresh news on the latter.

Bright Side of the News said it has learned that HTC and Google will announce the Nexus 9 on Oct. 15, probably the same day it will unveil the Nexus 6. That’s just five days from now and a day before Apple’s iPad event on Oct. 16. The site said it has learned Google will charge $399 for the Nexus 9 and it will launch on Nov. 3, a steep increase in the price from the Nexus 7, which was more affordable at $229. That suggests there’s going to be some serious hardware under the hood, but it also puts the price in iPad territory and in direct competition with some of the other high-end Android tablets from LG, Samsung, Sony and other OEMs.

Bright Side of the News also revealed that Google will sell the Nexus 9 on its Google Play Store but also in retail outlets. The company’s Nexus 7 launched in stores such as Best Buy and RadioShack, so that won’t be out of the ordinary, but what kind of store presence will it offer? These Nexus devices were once targeted at developers, but they’re becoming more and more consumer-focused devices that offer a pure Android experience.

If Google is indeed planning an event on Oct. 15, we should hear more about when and where any day now.
