If you’ve been eyeing up the Wii U GameCube controller adapter with the intentions of playing other new and aging games with your c-stick sporting controllers, you might want to brace yourself for some bad news. Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii U GameCube adapter will only work with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
There have been rumblings and rumors surrounding the adapter since its announcement. Some said that the add-on would let gamers play anything compatible with the classic controller with their GameCube inputs. Heck, even Best Buy’s product listing for the adapter has it wrong.

Nintendo sent an official statement regarding the adapter’s specific compatibility to Gamespot.
“The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software…
…The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion…”
There you have it.
Now, I’m personally holding on to hope here. I’d love to see Nintendo bring GameCube games to their Virtual Console service on the Wii U. If that happens, this adapter would obviously be a perfect pick up.
Until then, we’ll only use it for Smash. The brawler hits the Wii U on Nov. 21, 2014. That release date was announced officially yesterday.
