Amazon CEO’s Plans for The Washington Post Finally Leak Out

Earns Washington Post

Jeff Bezos caught us by surprise last year when he announced plans to buy the Washington Post, but now Amazon CEO’s plans for the respected newspaper are starting to leak out. A new report from Bloomberg Businessweek claims the paper is currently developing a news app that could launch this year on Amazon’s new Fire HDX 8.9 tablet.

The new app, apparently referred to as Project Rainbow internally, would also be available for other Fire tablets for free—at least at launch. It should also be available for the iPad and Android devices at some point on a paid subscription basis. The app is reportedly being developed by a team inside The Post led by former Salon editor-in-chief Kerry Lauerman.

Selling new Fire tablets with a Washington Post app pre-installed could definitely provide a boost for the paper. We’re also curious to see the app itself, which sounds a bit like the NYT Now service that launched earlier this year. If Bloomberg is right, the new app could launch very soon, though you may have to pick up a new Fire table to try it out for yourself.
