When video games cross over into feature films (and visa versa), the results are typically poor. There are some notable exceptions, sure, but otherwise these films are largely considered straight-to-video at best. So it’s with great surprise that a movie based on the iconic video game Tetris is being produced for the big screen. Wait, what?
Threshold Entertainment, known for several CGI projects intended for younger audiences, is partnering with The Tetris Company to develop a “sci-fi epic” inspired by one the world’s most famous video game. Seriously, Threshold Chairman, Larry Kasanoff, said the film will be an “epic sci-fi story” that’s going to be “really exciting.”
“In this new universe, as you’ll soon find out, there’s much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines,” said Henk Rogers, Managing Director of The Tetris Company.
How you can create an entire sci-fi universe around Tetris is beyond me. But I’m very curious to find out what the actual plot will be. For that matter, what will the dialog be like? If you’re left scratching your head at this news, you’re not alone. Now that Threshold is hyping this project up as a sci-fi epic, the studio best deliver. How it’ll actually extend beyond “simply clearing lines” remains to be seen.
Either way, the pieces for a Tetris movie have finally fallen into place.
