Amazon’s Media Streaming Chief Leaves After 15 Years

In the past few years we’ve seen Amazon make significant headway into the streaming market where it now offers some pretty solid options for video and music fans alike. That progress may all be due to one man, Bill Carr, who resigned from his position as head of digital music and video for Amazon this week after spending 15 years with the company. He started his tenure with Amazon in 1999.

Carr announced the news internally on Tuesday and an Amazon spokesperson confirmed his decision to The Wall Street Journal a day later. There’s no word on where he’s headed next, though for the moment Amazon says he plans to “spend time with family and travel.” We’re not sure if that’s code for something else, though it’s certainly possible Carr was poached by another company and simply can’t announce which one just yet.

Carr’s impact at Amazon has been particularly noticeable in the past few years, as he helped build up the company’s Instant Video service to compete with companies like Netflix and Hulu. He apparently worked to set up streaming deals with Viacom and others media groups, while also overseeing the creation of Amazon original TV shows including Betas and Alpha House. Most recently his team introduced Amazon Prime Music, which was met with lukewarm reviews due to its limited selection of content.

We’re curious to see how Amazon’s video and music streaming efforts will develop without Carr’s leadership. Even more interesting will be where he ends up, especially if it’s with a direct competitor like Netflix or Google.
