Google I:O 2014 Android Figure

Google is expected to launch a new stock Android tablet sometime this year, and now we have a potential launch date for the rumored Nexus 9. According to Paul O’Brien and an “anonymous tipster” the device will launch on October 16, meaning Google could announce its new tablet less than a month from now.

O’Brien doesn’t offer any more details on the Nexus 9 or where his information comes from, but he’s generally proven to be a pretty reliable source on mobile news. Android Authority notes that he was just one day off when predicting the Nexus 5 launch last year, and October 16 seems like a pretty reasonable date for Google to announce the new tablet. Of course, this prediction is from an anonymous tipster and not from O’Brien himself.

The UK-based Android developer also appears to confirm the ongoing rumor that Google is teaming up with HTC on its 8.9-inch tablet. Hopefully that means we’ll get a sleek all-metal design like the HTC One (M8), though it’s also possible the company could opt for plastic or a cheaper material to keep the price down.

Google generally releases each major Android update alongside a new piece of hardware, so we’re guessing the Nexus 9 launch will also mean an official debut for Android L. We’re still not sure what the next version of Google’s mobile OS will actually be called, but it looks like we won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
