WayForward Aiming for a Mid-October Release for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse

Fans of WayForward’s Shantae platforming series have been patiently, or impatiently depending on who you ask, for the latest entry in the series for quite some time. Delays and long periods of silence have plagued the last several months for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, but WayForward finally has a new window that it is aiming for.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse strips the sassy half-genie hero of her genie powers, and she is forced to rely on the weapon’s and tools of her pirate rivals to get them back. This will be the third game in WayForward’s most popular original IP, and both the previous games are available through the Nintendo 3DS eShop. The first game was a Game Boy Color release available on Virtual Console, and Risky’s Revege, the second game, was a DSi release that is still up and running.

A reboot was successfully funded on Kickstarter last year, and it will finally bring the series into full bloomin’ HD next year.

If you are a fan of Shantae and can’t wait until the Pirate’s Curse comes out, might I suggest other wonderful handheld platformers available on the Nintendo 3DS? Shovel Knight is one of the biggest and best indie games of the year, and the talent behind it are all former WayForward employees. Japanese developer Inti Creates also collaborates with WayForward on programming, and the two share very similar sources of inspiration. Its new game Azure Striker Gunvolt should speak to the WayForward crowd.

Both of these wonderful games should hold you over until WayForward finally gets Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse live and ready in mid-October. Take your time, guys.
