Apple’s big new HealthKit initiative, which the company hopes will change the medical landscape, apparently isn’t ready for launch. The timing of the news obviously isn’t ideal, as iOS 8 launches today. The issue with HealthKit is described as “significant,” though it isn’t exactly clear what’s preventing it from seeing a proper launch. Health apps updated to support iOS 8 have apparently been pulled from the App Store as Apple works the issues out.

Brian Mueller, developer of CARROT Fit, said his app was pulled because HealthKit is broken and not yet ready for launch. “Sounds like HealthKit won’t be working at all this week,” Mueller said. “And there’s no ETA for when a bug fix will go live.”

It’s unlike Apple to be so unprepared for a big launch. First it was Continuity, and now another major part of Apple’s new mobile OS is delayed. The company hasn’t publicly said the new platform is being held back, so we’ll see how this plays out over the next few days. But after all these weeks and months of beta releases, developers will have to wait until HealthKit is ready to unleash their updates.

HealthKit is Apple’s play for the health and fitness market, and is capable of keeping track of data, such as Nutrition, Sleep, Vitals, Weight and more. The fact that it’s not quite ready has us questioning Apple’s focus, though with two new iPhones launching this Friday, the company might be a bit pre-occupied.

Update: Apple has released a statement that clears the whole ordeal up. “We discovered a bug that prevents us from making HealthKit apps available on iOS 8 today,” the statement reads. “We’re working quickly to have the bug fixed in a software update and have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month.”
