Microsoft Officially Buys Minecraft Maker Mojang for $2.5 Billion (UPDATED)

We’ve heard rumors buzzing around for the last week or so regarding the potential sale of Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, to Microsoft. Initial word suggested that the sale would go down for $2 billion, and that wasn’t too far off.

Officially, Mojang has been sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion. The deal brings all of Mojang’s properties to Microsoft, though what they’ll do with them exactly remains to be seen.

Phil Spencer and Xbox released a video this morning regarding the sale, and you’ll find that above.

There’s also been a rumor that Markus “Notch” Persson will leave Mojang once the transition period after this sale is over.

We’ll have more news on this sale and what it means for Minecraft as it comes.

UPDATE: Notch has officially confirmed that he will be leaving Mojang.
