Tim Cook: “Blow-Away” Products Coming That Haven’t Even Been Rumored

Apple iPhone Event 2014 -- Apple Watch Tim Cook Reaction 2

Apple CEO sat down for an interview with Charlie Rose, which is set two air in two parts on PBS; the first part aired last night, and the second airs on Monday. In the interview, Cook cycles through the usual topics: Steve Jobs, Apple TV, Apple’s recent Beats acquisition. But he also talks about the company’s recent iPhone 6 announcement, and even hints that the company is working on “blow-away” products that haven’t even been rumored yet.

On the larger iPhone, Cook says Apple could have gone bigger years ago, but instead chose to perfect the formula rather than chase the competition.

“It’s never been just about making a larger phone… it’s been about making a better phone in every single way,” Cook said. “And so we ship things when they’re ready, and we think that both the display technology here, the battery technology, but all—but everything else and the software.”

Steve Jobs famously argued against the larger form factor, and Apple has been stubborn about offering anything beyond 4 inches; it was a surprise when the company went with a 4-inch screen when it introduced the iPhone 5/5s/5c. But the company’s tune has changed dramatically this year, announcing 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models. Whether that’s due to Cook’s leadership is unclear; would Apple have made this move with Jobs still at the helm?

Cook touches on other topics, like the iCloud nude celebrity scandal, and why he believes Google is Apple’s biggest competition, not Samsung. Hint: Google is the maker of Android, which is handily the most popular mobile OS. Cook also flat out denies any interest in Path, and says that Apple isn’t getting into social networking.

Interesting stuff, but Cook’s comments about products that haven’t even been rumored yet might be what gets the most attention. We know a watch is coming early next year, and we’ve heard about a larger iPad. So what “blow-away” products is Cook hinting at? Will these products come out next year? A few years from now? Will it be virtual reality? A standalone camera? Robots?

You can check out some clips from the interview here, and catch the second part when it airs on Monday.
