HTC has a neatly packaged new lock screen app on Google Play that was launched as part of its ongoing effort to issue solo apps that are easier to update. The new app apparently fixes an issue where users were accidentally pocket-inputting the wrong passcode and resetting their devices.
The update is available for newer devices and the company says you’ll be able to swipe right to BlinkFeed, swipe left to Widget Home, and swipe up for a previously used app. That sounds great, but the early reviews aren’t positive. “Screwed up my phone,” says Matt Conta. “Stuck on a reboot loop,” complains Faris Hadi. Others point out that the app offers no customization options, and is lacking in features. I’d proceed with caution if you go down this route.
HTC has offered standalone apps in Google Play before, a similar approach by Motorola, which offers its software tweaks as apps to ensure faster Android updates. HTC Lock Screen is available for free in Google Play now.
