Accessory retailer MobileFun has begun accepting pre-orders for the Samsung Gear VR, which turns your new Galaxy Note 4 into a virtual reality headset. The company is charging $249.99/£150 for the device, but it’s unclear how long customers will have to wait for it.
MobileFun is a Samsung authorized dealer — and a reputable case and accessory retailer — so we have no reason to doubt its details on Gear VR pricing are accurate. And $249.99 in the U.S. and £150 in the U.K. seems a fairly reasonable price for this device. But of course, you’ll need to buy a Galaxy Note 4 as well to use it.
Samsung announced the Gear VR at IFA last week, alongside its new Note phablets and the Gear S smartwatch. It’s a lot like an Oculus Rift, only it’s powered by the Note 4 itself, so it’s a completely untethered unit that you can use almost anywhere. We were pretty impressed with it, despite a few software bugs, but its long-term success will hinge on how well it is supported by third-party developers.
Samsung said that it planned to sell the Gear VR through its own online store initially, but MobileFun’s listing indicates some third-party retailers will have access to it as well. What we still don’t know at this point, however, is when the device will actually be available. MobileFun doesn’t provide a shipping date, and all Samsung told us is that it would be coming later this fall.
If you really want a Gear VR as soon as they’re available, then, you can order yours through MobileFun now.
