Microsoft took the stage for its press conference at IFA in Berlin on Thursday where it announced the latest version of Windows Phone that will be landing on some Lumia smartphones. The software update, dubbed Lumia Denim, offers several enhancements that should improve the Windows Phone experience for many users.
First, it offers the ability to launch Cortana in hands-free mode by simply saying “Hey Cortana,” which means you can activate it with your voice. That’s similar to how one might access Siri in iOS 8 by saying “Hey Siri,” or Google Now in Android by saying “OK Google.” Lumia Denim also adds camera enhancements. A user can launch video directly by long pressing the dedicated camera button on a phone.
High-end Lumia handsets like the Lumia 1520, Lumia Icon and Lumia 930 will also receive an enhanced Lumia Camera application that focuses on speed for quicker camera boot times and capture speeds, including support for rapid fire, high-definition 4K video recording at 30-frames per second ad improvements for shots taken in low-light conditions.
Lumia Camera will launch as part of Lumia Denim for the Lumia 930, Lumia Icon and Lumia 1520 during the fourth quarter of this year as an over-the-air update. Lumia Denim will also hit “all the other Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphones, following partner testing and approvals,” Microsoft said.
