Wii U’s Splatoon Born in Nintendo’s “Garage,” a Home for Unique Ideas

One of the most original and surprising Wii U games to see a reveal at E3 a few months back was easily Splatoon. A brand new IP, this multiplayer shooter tasks players with covering the space in ink and then transforming into a squid for fast map traversal.

It sounds nuts, because it is.

It turns out, as revealed by a feature on Shigeru Miyamoto in EDGE, that the idea for Splatoon was born in Nintendo’s Garage. This game, alongside prototypes being worked on by Shigeru Miyamoto, are the first to come from this new home for development at Nintendo.

Specifically, the Garage is a place for young developers in the company to work on completely original ideas. Here’s Miyamoto

“There are increasing numbers of young staff at Nintendo’s development studios these days…and these young guys really want to express themselves…

…Class time’s over: they gather together and think about new projects completely apart from their everyday business assignments. When all of those projects have advanced to a certain stage, we gather together and exchange opinions on the outcome of each of them, and together we decide which ones should continue. We may have shown several software titles at E3 [that came from Garage], but there are many others in development too.”

The Garage, in my opinion, seems to be exactly what a company like Nintendo needs. There’s no doubt that the developer attracts incredible talent in Japan based solely on its history. The Garage may be a new way for this talent to shine without leaning on IPs like Mario and Zelda.

If there are many other unique games in development form the Garage, we might have a lot to look forward to in the near future.
