It’s not the Snapchat competitor many were expecting, but it might actually be better. Instagram on Tuesday officially unveiled a new standalone video recording app called Hyperlapse from Instagram. The app essentially gives users the technology to record high-quality, stable time lapse videos on their mobile devices.
Jumping around the app real quick, the results produced by the app are pretty impressive. The interface itself is pretty barebones—you are basically presented with a button to record and that’s it. As you record the app will tell you how many seconds you have recorded for, and how that translates into “hyper lapse” time. The default speed is 6x, but you can bump it as high as 12x, or as low as 1x.
Time lapse videos are tricky business. You typically need professional-grade equipment or, at the very least, a lot of patience. But Instagram’s software makes creating these cool videos as easy as tapping a button. The app is meant for quicker moments—traveling on a train, walking through a forest, biking at the beach—turning them into stylized videos that can then be shared on Facebook and Instagram.
We’ll have a more thorough hands-on of Hyperlapse for Instagram later today. The app seems plenty powerful, and judging from the below video shared by Instagram, it produces some really stable shots that normal video on an iPhone wouldn’t produce. Oh, and by the way, the app is only available for iOS at the moment; apparently there are limitations in the Android API that are preventing it from launching on that platform for now.
