Fatal Frame 5 box (1)

Amazon Japan has revealed the box art for Fatal Frame: The Raven Haired Shrine Maiden after putting the game live on its website.

Like previous games in the series, the cover art features a ghastly image of females caught up in a supernatural situation. Two ladies, one of them possibly the titular maiden, float underwater in near embrace with each other. Koei Tecmo has stated that the game’s main theme revolves around a phobia of water, giving the cover a little context.

It’s not quite as scary as previous box arts from the series, this one going for a bit more erotic imagery than anything else, but Koei Tecmo’s Japanese image might be all we end up with. Nintendo, who owns a share in publishing the series, and Koei Tecmo have ignored all calls to publish the last two Wii games in the series in America, and I doubt this one will be any different.

The Wii U could really use a strong horror game to attract a new crowd, but it’s obviously not a big enough calling to spur Nintendo’s interest.

Fatal Frame: The Raven Haired Shrine Maiden launches on Sept. 27 in Japan for the Wii U. Importers, get ready. Gematsu
