Infamous Developer Sucker Punch Hit With Layoffs

Typically, in most careers out there, when you make a successful product that makes your bosses money, you get to keep your job and carry your talents over into the next project. Not so in video game development.

inFamous: Second Son developer Sucker Punch is the latest in a series of high profile studios which have been hit with “a reduction in workforce” shortly after wrapping up work on a major title. Sony issued a comment to IGN, stating:

SCEA can confirm a reduction in workforce has taken place at Sucker Punch Productions. Sucker Punch is appreciative of the tremendous work team members contributed to the inFAMOUS and Sly Cooper series, and wishes them the best in their next endeavors.

IGN points out that mentioning Sly Cooper means that the high profile veterans from the company have been let go, leaving the world to wonder if Sucker Punch will still be the same company without its longest running employees.

Sucker Punch joins Eidos Montreal after releasing Thief, SCE Santa Monico after releasing God of War Ascension, Disney Interactive after releasing Disney Infinity, and Irrational Games after releasing BioShock Infinite. That’s not even counting other layoff examples following less successful games like 2K Marin after The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and Rare after Kinect Sports Rivals.

Best of luck to those who lost their jobs and are looking for employment. Maybe we’ll see a decent indie game or two emerge from this wreckage.
