Instagram Gets Serious About Profits With Latest Hire

In the past year we’ve seen Instagram slowly introduce paid ads into its photo stream, but now the firm is getting serious with a little help from its parent company. Facebook regional director James Quarles is joining Instagram as Global Head of Business and Brand Development where he’ll help turn the popular app into a money-making machine.

Instagram actually created an entirely new position for Quarles, and he’ll report directly to company co-founder Kevin Systrom. It’s unclear exactly what he’ll be doing at Instagram, though Re/code reports Quarles is taking over the marketing and sales teams. We’re guessing it will mean a more focused ad effort, though hopefully it won’t mean too many promoted posts in your Instagram feed.

Quarles spent the last three years working out of Facebook’s London offices where he worked directly with brands and other corporate partners. It’s possible he could bring some of those connections over to Instagram, which until now has only shown ads from a few premium brands. Either way, Quarles isn’t actually headed to Instagram until the fall, so it could be a while before we see any changes come to the service.
