When Microsoft first unveiled the Surface Pro 3 the company made an interesting decision by bringing a MacBook Air onstage as well to compare the two devices. Now the latest Surface Pro 3 ads are here and, as expected, they’re aimed squarely at Apple fans and their beloved MacBook laptops, offering a throwback to the classic “I’m a Mac” ads that skewered Microsoft almost a decade ago.
Three new ads show the Surface Pro 3 and a MacBook Air side-by-side, while two voice actors or a single narrator explain why Microsoft’s latest take on the laptop is better than Apple’s best efforts. In one ad an Apple fan pulls out an iPad and a physical notepad to match the Surface Pro 3’s touchscreen and responsive stylus. The other two videos focus on everything Microsoft’s new tablet can do, from productivity apps like Adobe Photoshop to that built-in friction kickstand.
We’re big fans of the Surface Pro 3 here at TechnoBuffalo, but whether Microsoft’s new high-powered tablet can actually take on the MacBook Air depends on what you need from a laptop. Windows 8.1 can definitely holds its own against the latest version of OS X, though if you already own an iPhone it may be easier to stay in Apple’s ecosystem. Microsoft’s latest magnetic keyboard is huge step up, but it still feels a bit flimsy in your lap compared to an regular laptop. We also wish Microsoft would just throw in the keyboard for free instead of charging an extra $130.
