Huawei’s Ascend P7 already boasts an impressive glass design, but it looks like the firm could be preparing to launch a sapphire version of its flagship phone. According to Chinese blog MyDrivers the company recently unveiled a sapphire glass version of the Ascend P7 in front of the press this week, though it’s unclear if the device is actually slated for wide release.
Not only did Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong show off a sapphire glass display in public, he apparently let one reporter stab at the device with a knife to demonstrate its durability. MyDrivers suggests the device could launch later this year as the Ascend P7S. It’s the second such phone to pack a sapphire display. Kyocera was first to the market two days ago when it announced the Kyocera Brigadier for Verizon.
The Ascend P7 already borrows a lot of traits from the iPhone, though with a larger 5-inch display. A new version with sapphire could help Huawei compete early against the iPhone 6 – though rumors have flip-flopped back and forth in regards to whether or not Apple is actually going to add sapphire to the iPhone 6, or simply a stronger material than Gorilla Glass.
