The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to dominate Samsung’s IFA 2014 press event next month in Berlin, but a new report from Yonhap News claims a SIM-enabled Gear Solo could also make its debut at the annual tech show. The rumored smartwatch could be Samsung’s first that’s capable of making calls, sending texts and accessing the Internet without connecting to a smartphone first.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of the alleged Gear Solo, but Yonhap News seems convinced that Samsung will unveil the device early next month as it looks for new sources of revenue. The report also notes that the upcoming smartwatch won’t have access to high-speed LTE networks, instead relying on 3G signals. That could be a problem for some people, especially if the Gear Solo is marketed as a replacement for your smartphone.
It’s been just under a year since Samsung unveiled its first smartwatch, but the company still hasn’t had much success in the new market. The Gear Solo could be an interesting device if it’s done right, but most fans will be more interested to hear about the Galaxy Note 4 or even the company’s rumored virtual reality headset. We’ll be covering Samsung’s IFA announcement live from Berlin and we can’t wait to see what Samsung has planned.
