Apple’s never been very interested in social media. The company doesn’t have any real presence on Twitter or Facebook, but that may be about to change. Cupertino’s latest big hire is Musa Tariq who ran social media and digital marketing for Nike and Burberry before taking a job with Apple.

Tariq confirmed the news on Twitter today with a post after updating his profile to reflect the new position. His new job is officially “Digital Marketing Director” though we assume he’ll also be tasked with building up Apple’s social media presence. The company runs a few accounts for iTunes, the App Store and other consumer services, but there’s still no official Apple Twitter or Facebook page, at least with any real updates.
Apple’s new hire has plenty of experience with social media. At Nike he worked to boost its connection with professional athletes online, and at Burberry he helped push the company into China. Both experiences should help Apple, which is still building brand recognition in China and is also expected to make a big push into fitness with a smartwatch this fall.
Of course the fact that Tariq worked with Apple’s new retail chief Angela Ahrendts probably didn’t hurt his chances of landing the new position either, but it sounds like he’ll be bringing a lot of skills to the company’s lackluster social media strategy.
