2015 is set to be the year of Mad Max. Not only are we getting a game based on the property, but we get Mad Max: Fury Road.
Two things stick out immediately about the trailer shown this weekend at San Diego Comic Con: How much it looks like Mad Max and just how few other movies do.
Tom Hardy looks like the perfect choice to don Max’s leather duds in this reboot, which is directed by the guy behind the original trilogy, George Miller. Who has, incidentally, spent the time since Beyond Thunderdome directing classics like Babe: A Pig in the City and Happy Feet. Immediately – even if you skip past the shot of Max’s iconic car, the Interceptor – it’s obvious this is Mad Max, and there isn’t anything quite like it.
Somehow the costumes, sets, and vehicles ride a perfect line between looking cobbled together from parts and fitting the unique look of the Mad Max series.
The cars and chases, too, look like exactly what we’d hope for: An updated but still distinct take on the dry, dusty, brutal wasteland that Max lives in.
Mad Max: Fury Road is currently set for release on May 15, 2015.
