Yelp fans already upload thousands of photos to the service every day. Now the company is rolling out a new feature that lets you record and upload short 12-second video reviews straight from your smartphone.
Shooting videos on Yelp looks pretty easy. The interface is simple and reminds us of Vine or Instagram Video. It’s also built into the current camera feature, so you won’t have to go rooting through the app’s menu to find the new video option.
Turning every meal into a video shoot may sound silly, but Yelp argues that there are some things a photo just can’t communicate. A 12-second film can help convey a restaurants ambiance, offer a quick tour of the entire space or let you know what kind of background music to expect. You can get most of that from a written review as well, but Yelp notes that people spend 2.5 times longer on a page with images compared to one that’s just words.
Even if you’re not interested in making your own video reviews, today’s update should make Yelp even better for everyone. The new feature is available for iPhone and should makes it way onto Android in the very near future.
