Foursquare Gets a Total Redesign, Here’s What You Need to Know

A few months ago Foursquare took some of its most iconic features, namely check-ins and mayors, and spun them off into a new app called Swarm. What’s left behind is a redesigned version of Foursquare that’s all about helping you find cool places to check out wherever you are. The new app won’t launch for a few more weeks, but today the company is offering a look at what’s to come.

Everything about Foursquare has been tweaked, right down to the new app icon that ditches the green check mark for a bright pink upper-case F. Once you boot up the app, you’ll get a personalized experience based on your own interests as well as your location. The app also lets you follow other people for recommendations, and promises to learn more about you the more you use it.

The new version of Foursquare is also designed to work seamlessly with Swarm. If you have both apps on your phone, you’ll see a Swarm check-in button appear on every venue page in Foursquare, offering a quick way to let your friends know where you are. Starting tomorrow, the company says it plans to move your entire check-in history along with your friends and photos over the Swarm, so it’s probably time to download the new app if you haven’t already.

We’re still not sure whether Foursquare’s new two-app strategy can help it hold onto its 50,000,000 user base while also attracting even more people. The new app’s delayed rollout has definitely been a turnoff for some, but hopefully everything will be running smoothly in a few weeks.
