HTC has confirmed that the unlocked version of its flagship One M8 will receive its Android 4.4.3 KitKat update later this week. It will be the last KitKat update for this device ahead of Android L, but HTC says it will include the latest security fixes from Android 4.4.4.
HTC Vice President of Management Mo Versi confirmed on Twitter this weekend that users could expect to see the release early this week. Versi also added, “we’ve incorporated the security fixes from 4.4.4 into 4.4.3.”
So, it’s Android 4.4.3, but with the important security fixes from Android 4.4.4 baked-in. Confusing, right? It’s unclear why HTC didn’t just release an Android 4.4.4 upgrade instead, but presumably, the Android 4.4.3 software was already near completion, and it was quicker and easier to do it this way.
It doesn’t really matter, though. The security fixes are the most important thing from Android 4.4.4, so as long as those are coming, One M8 owners should be pretty happy — especially with that Android L upgrade to look forward to later.
Google will make its next-generation operating system available to the public this fall following its unveiling at Google I/O last month, and HTC has promised that its flagship devices — including the One M8 — will get it within 90 days of its release.
