Tablets to Overtake PC Sales in 2015, Study Says

Gartner released its latest predictions for the device market today, covering PC, tablets, smartphones and “ultramobile” (2-in-1 hybrid) sales through 2015. While the report is mostly just a bit of educated speculation, it’s still interesting to see how drastically the industry could change a little over a year from now.

Overall, Gartner predicts device shipments will increase by 4.2 percent from 2013 to 2014, before growing even larger in 2015. At the end of the year PC shipments should still outnumber tablet shipments by about 50 million units, though a year later Gartner claims tablets will finally pull ahead. Meanwhile, smartphone sales should continue to accelerate, hittingĀ 1,862,766,000 shipments in 2014 andĀ almost 2 billion shipments in 2015.

The study also hones in competing operating systems, predicting that Android will continue to dominate, while Microsoft and Apple make solid gains as well. By the end of 2015, however, Google’s mobile OS could be running on over 50 percent of every PC, smartphone, tablet and “ultramobile” on earth.

Overall Gartner is pretty optimistic, assuming a huge wave of PC upgrades is on the horizon. The report also predicts the iPhone 6 will be a huge hit and cheap tablets will continue to sell even as more expensive slates fall out of fashion. Hit the source link below to check out the full report.
