Are People Getting Tired of the iPad?

Apple is set to announce its fiscal third quarter 2014 earnings next week on July 22. In that report we’ ll find out just how many iPads, iPhones and iPod units Apple sold during the quarter. In Q2, Apple noted that sales of its iPad were down 16 percent since the same quarter of 2013, but, as Fortune points out, Tim Cook tried to blame the sales decline on other things, like inventory, instead of a lack of interest among consumers. Now, Fortune has again created a list of professional and independent analysts and their estimates for Q3 iPad sales.

Horace Deiu from Asymco is the most bullish, with expectations of 16 million iPad units sold during the quarter, which is still 350,000 fewer units that Apple sold last quarter, but would mark an increase in iPad sales from Q3 2013, when Apple sold 14.6 million iPad units. Meanwhile, the most bearish analyst is T. Michael Walkley with Canaccord Genuity, who believes Apple will report 12.26 million iPad units sold. On average, iPad unit sales come in at 14.43 million units which would basically mean flat sales for Apple year-on-year.

We won’t know the final figure until next week, but perhaps Apple may need to get its newer iPads, with faster processors and Touch ID sensors, out the door quicker in an effort to drum up new interest in its tablets. If sales drop off yet again, Wall Street is going to start grilling Cook and his team for an explanation.
