Sorry Everyone, Facebook’s Newest App is Only For Famous People

Facebook released another specialized app today, but unlike Paper, Slingshot or Messenger this one isn’t available to just anyone with a smartphone and an account. The new iPhone app, called Mentions, is designed specifically for celebrities and other verified pages, so good luck using it if you don’t already have a little blue check mark next to your name.

Mentions comes from Facebook Creative Labs, a small team working within the company that previously released Paper and more recently Slingshot. The new app lets celebrities track conversations where they’ve been tagged and jump in to comment. It also offers many of the same features as the regular Facebook app, letting you follow other accounts, receive notifications and share status updates, though there’s also a new option to host a live Q&A session.

Overall it’s a clever move by Facebook to get more celebrities using the social network over competing services like Twitter, and the company claims people who tested early versions of the app posted about twice as much as usual. We also can’t help but wonder why Twitter doesn’t already offer a similar app of its own. Facebook ripped that blue checkmark right from Twitter’s website, and now it’s taking things a step further with a special app just for verified accounts.
