Mortal Kombat X To Have One “Guest Character,” Returning Characters Could be DLC

Freddy Kreuger

NetherRealm Studios is all about guest appearances and borrowing from other franchises to battle against Mortal Kombat‘s iconic characters. Freddy Krueger joined the ranks of the previous Mortal Kombat as a DLC download, and Scorpion would go on to battle against the DC heroes and villains in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

And of course, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was also a thing for a while.

Series co-creator Ed Boon has spoken out on the likelyhood of a new “guest character” in a Madcatz-produced Twitch video, saying it is likely to happen.

“I think there’s a novelty to having a downloaded guest character. The chances of [having] at least one of them will be pretty good.”

Boon also confirmed that the game would star “more new MK characters since the first Mortal Kombat,” but in slightly discouraging news, you might have to pay extra for a few of your classic favorites.

“If you don’t see your favorite character, there’s always the DLC characters. [You] can hold out hope to see that we’re going to include them.”

But hey, this is just the world we live in, right? You have to pay if you want to play as your second tier favorites. Unlocking them through clever secrets means more work and less profit for publishers and developers.

Chances are most of the iconic and classic characters won’t be treated in such a way, but where does the cutoff begin? Are Kabal and Cyrax popular enough to make the standard roster? NetherRealm Studios knows you are more likely to drop money on them than an original newcomer, so the DLC wall has to hit the established faces at some point.

Mortal Kombat X will be released for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2015.
