Until today most reports have suggested that Apple is working on either two different sized iWatch devices or a single model with a 2.5-inch display, but now a report out of Taiwan claims that Apple is actually building three different models. According to Economic Daily, Apple is building an iWatch with a 1.6-inch display, another iWatch with a 1.8-inch display, and a third model with a 1.8-inch display made out of sapphire. All three models are expected during the third quarter of this year, according to supply chain sources speaking to Economic Daily.
The report differs from a Reuters story last month that suggested the final iWatch size will come in at 2.5-inches. Sapphire has been mentioned several times before, and Apple’s Arizona factory is reportedly building sapphire displays for both the iWatch and the upcoming iPhone 6. Sapphire is a premium and super strong material that prevents scratches and is already used in high-end wristwatches.
Apple’s iWatch is expected – according to other rumors – to make its debut in October, following the introduction of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and, possibly the 5.5-inch iPhone Air, in September. One analyst recently said she expects Apple to ship 60 million iWatch units in the first year if it’s priced around $300.
