Apple released iTunes 11.3 today, and along with it additional support for iTunes Extras.
While iTunes Extra are a nice way of closing the gap between digital and physical releases by letting you enjoy numerous bonus features, the fact that you could only play them on your computer and not your Apple TV or iOS device has been a large complaint for some time. Watching a movie on your television and then having to return to your computer to watch the deleted scenes is something that has never made much sense.
With the iTunes 11.3 release today, Apple announced that not only are iTunes Extras finally coming to the current generations of the Apple TV, but support will also be added to iOS 8 when it releases this fall. At long last you will be able to watch gag reels of your favorite films while on the plane, or see that deleted scene on your iPad that everyone says makes the film better.
For the new Extras feature to work on your Apple TV, you will need to have updated its software to version 6.2, and you will need to have purchased an HD version of the film with the extras for them to appear.
As an unusual bonus, Apple specifically mentions that any new bonus features are added to a film you already purchased, you will receive those as well at no additional charge. That’s something physical media definitely can’t compete with.
The iTunes 11.3 update is available now for those looking to update.
