Demos are supposed to be free. That’s why they’re called demos, right? They’re supposed to demonstrate. It was a surprise when two of Electronic Arts’ games had dollar signs attached to their demos this last weekend.
People were, understandably, pretty ticked when they logged in over the long weekend to find that EA’s FIFA 14 and EA Sports UFC demos were accompanied by a $4.99 price tag.
Neither Microsoft nor Electronic Arts had previously charged for game demos, so many assumed it was a pricing error. Others looked at it as yet another cash grab by the publisher. Fortunately, though, the former was the correct answer.
In a response to Game Informer, EA said that “the price associated with FIFA 14 and EA Sports UFC demos was due to a technical error. Both demos have now been fixed in the Microsoft store.”
Both demos are once again listed as free, and while a repeat is possible, it would be a big surprise even for “the worst company in America” to charge for a demo on purpose.
