SEGA has confirmed that the next game in its popular action RPG series, Yakuza, is in development for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Speaking with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Series Supervisor Toshihiro Nagoshi and Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama confirmed that the game will not be a spin-off entry like the 19th century samurai inspired Yakuza: Ishin or the zombie apocalypse knock off Yakuza: Dead Souls.

The two stopped short of confirming this to be Yakuza 6, not strapping a number onto the game. Like most games in the main series though, SEGA will be aiming for realistic recreation of modern day Japan with busy urban environments and more mini-games than you can shake a Pocky stick at.

No mention came of a localization, but it all seems moot now with Yakuza 5 and Yakuza: Ishin not coming to America yet either.

What also comes as no surprise is that SEGA is aiming for a cross-generational PlayStation 3 release. The PlayStation 4 has not caught on in Japan with so few reasons to go out and buy one, and the huge PlayStation 3 audience simply can’t be ignored.

It’s a shame, but cross-generational games will be pretty much guaranteed for every major series from Japan as it struggles to establish a home-grown next-gen audience.
