Google is expected to reveal some big news tomorrow at its annual I/O developer’s conference, but today Mountain View has at least one small announcement to make. The company is launching its latest service, Google Domains, which will focus on helping small businesses get online by staking out a URL. Look out, GoDaddy.
The core of Google Domains is a search engine, which lets you search out and easily purchase a URL for your business. You’ll also be able to sell domain names through the site later on. Google offers up to 100 domain-based email addresses and 100 sub-domains with the purchase of a domain name. The service doesn’t include any website-building tools of its own, but the search giant is partnering with Squarespace, Wix, Weebly and Shopify to help you get started.
Google says the service was created after it found through research that 55 percent of small businesses still don’t have their own websites. We’re sure these new URLs will help drive more money to small companies, but it’s also sure to provide a boost to the Google’s own profits.
