Recent rumors suggest Apple has been prepping a 12-inch MacBook Air, and now a new report appears to confirm the company’s production plans for later this year. According to DigiTimes, production for the new laptop will kick off in the third quarter of 2014.
According to Digitimes’ sources, Taiwan-based laptop maker Quanta Computer will handle production of the 12-inch MacBook. The same sources claim Apple plans to eventually phase out the 11-inch MacBook Air, which is apparently too close in size to the iPad Air. Cupertino allegedly planned to release a 12-inch iPad earlier this year, but has since pivoted towards a new lightweight laptop instead.
It’s still too early to know anything about the new MacBook Air for sure, but recent leaks suggest it could take a few design elements from the iPad. One report claimed the device won’t need a built-in fan, while some analysts are predicting Apple could give the upcoming laptop a Retina display.
It’s possible Apple will slip the news in with its iPad 6 and iPad Air updates this fall. Then again, if this 12-inch device turns out to be more of a MacBook-iPad hybrid it may just merit its very own press event later this year.
