The Last of Us Remastered Gets a $10 Price Cut, Pre-orders Will Get a Refund

The Last of Us DLC

Remember last generation when we saw a giant wave of our favorite classics remastered into HD? Yeah, that was great stuff. Zone of the Enders 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Devil May Cry, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X. I have an entire shelf dedicated to my remastered favorites on my entertainment setup.

One of the best things about rebuying these games was the price cut. Normally, these bundles of great games would only cost half the price of a typical $60 game, and maybe even $40 at most. Not a bad deal considering how many fantastic gaming hours you got from each package.

Well, with the new consoles coming out, we can expect the same bargain shopping from yesterday’s hits, right?

Well, it didn’t seem that way at first. Sony slapped a $60 price tag on The Last of Us Remastered, scaring the Sony community into thinking that games from the previous generation would indeed be costing them the same price of admission at a current generation game.

The decision sparked a lot of ire, and possibly more than Sony was willing to deal with. It has since backed off the price, dropping it to $50 and promised on Twitter that those who already have it pre-ordered would be getting a refund in the coming week.

I never pay $60 for a video game anymore, so I would have waited for a price drop anyway, but this is a case where I need to agree with Sony. The Last of Us is only a year old game, so even though it was previous generation, a $60 price tag still seems justified on their part. Packing Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 ,and Devil May Cry 3 into a single box and selling it for $40 makes sense since the games were released way over a decade ago.

That being said, we’ve already seen Nintendo drop the price of The Wind Waker‘s HD remaster, a game now two generations old, to $50, so I can assume that this is now the standard price publishers have chosen? Obviously not as Amazon has Halo: The Master Chief Collection set at $60 as well, but that has six games included, some as old as 2004 and others more recent like Halo 4 and the Halo 5 beta.

In other words, just don’t expect a standard anymore. It’s never going to happen. The Last of Us Remastered will be released on July 29 for the PlayStation 4.
