Last week Facebook Slingshot, the company’s answer to Snapchat, made its brief debut in Apple’s App Store. The ephemeral messaging app was quickly pulled from the store, and the company called the early release an accident in an official statement. Now a new report from 9to5Mac claims Slingshot’s official launch is just one day away.
The news comes from an unnamed source, but 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman has an excellent track record when it comes to breaking news. Either way, we’ll only have to wait one more day to find out whether he’s right about this one. Last week Facebook told the press Slingshot would get an official launch “soon,” so we’re expecting it to hit the app store in the very near future.
Based on last week’s inadvertent leak, Slingshot appears to be a pretty clear Snapchat knockoff with at least one new twist on the popular messaging app. You can use the new service to send “slings” in the form of a photo, video or text message. Once your friend gets your sling they’ll need to send something back before they can see it. It’s an interesting concept, though whether it catches on remains to be seen. With Slingshot reportedly set to launch tomorrow it shouldn’t be long before we get a chance to try out the new app ourselves.
