New data suggests almost half of the U.S. subscribes to at least one video streaming service, whether it be Netflix, Hulu Plus or Amazon Instant. That’s not surprising given the quality of content being offered through each platform, and how accessible they are through consoles, set-top boxes and more. What is surprising, however, is that, according to the data, there’s an increasing likelihood folks who do subscribe to a streaming service have cut the cord completely.
The data was published by Leichtman Research Group, and found that 47-percent of all American households pay for video streaming; 80-percent of Netflix subscribers still pay for cable—a big percentage, but that’s actually down from 2012, which was at 85-percent. The increasing trend to cut the cord completely has also been spurned by the sheer availability of non-TV devices, such as smartphones, tablets and computers; 31-percent of subscribers typically prefer their mobile gadgets for streaming video on a daily basis, with that figure as high as 58-percent weekly.
Streaming video is quickly shaping the way we view content, with some of the best shows available exclusively through these services, so it’s no wonder the stats keep favoring the cord-cutting lifestyle. If only some of these bigger networks would start providing an a la carte option, the streaming world would be complete.
