This is amiibo, Nintendo’s Shot at NFC Capable Toys

Nintendo had a chance to make Skylanders an exclusive thing. Before it was lead by Activision to every platform under the sun, the makers of the toys came to Nintendo.

Nintendo being, well, Nintendo, passed on the third party work. Skylanders went on to become huge, and Nintendo installed an NFC reader in the Wii U’s GamePad.

Now, Nintendo announced amiibo, their own NFC toy line. They’ll work like the Skylanders toys do, and they’ll run across a whole range of Wii U games. Nintendo’s even designing an NFC reader for the 3DS.

So, right, amiibo will work in the new Smash. Here’s how nintendo details that bit of info on their official site.

In the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U game, you’ll be able to scan your amiibo into the game. You’ll then be able to fight against your amiibo, team up with it in battle or watch it battle other in-game characters. Your amiibo will be able to increase its attack and defense stats and even learn new fighting tactics.

amiibo are also slated to be compatible with even more Nintendo games, like Mario Kart 8. Working on assumption alone, that tells me toys will translate to new racers, karts and possibly even tracks.

These amiibo could be an absolute boon for Nintendo, turning profit quickly if marketed well. So far, so good. The reception to amiibo on places like Twitter, NeoGAF, Reddit and Facebook has been overwhelmingly positive.

Nintendo says they’ll be releasing around 10 amiibo at launch, though they’ll be pumping out more as time passes.

For me, it’s all about the price point. If these amiibo sit at $5-10, they’re a slam dunk.

We’ll have more on these figures as it comes. Stay tuned.
